Weight Loss:

Getting past the plateau!

When individuals reduce the calories in their diet, their metabolism may begin to slow down. This is normal  when the caloric intake is lower than the body's burn rate, the body will burn tissue (both fat and muscle) for fuel.

In fact, this is the rationale behind any calorie-reduction weight loss plan.

Unfortunately, as soon as the body senses it is burning muscle for fuel, it reduces its burn rate in order to conserve the muscle. This results in the dreaded "dieting plateau" effect. Weight loss may be easy for the first few pounds, then become more difficult as the burn rate readjusts to the lower calorie intake.

Exercise, especially resistance training with weights, will lessen this muscle loss and nudge the metabolic rate back upward. Increasing protein and good fats combined with exercise, will increase muscle mass, resulting in a higher metabolic rate and a leaner, more sculpted body.

For the most effective weight management program, it is helpful to monitor changes in metabolism often during weight loss, especially if you find yourself stuck on a plateau!
